Fresh new website to encourage more volunteer registrations

me&you implemented updated brand assets and created a new user-friendly website for Voluntary Support North Surrey.

Challenge

Voluntary Support North Surrey provides a number of support services to organisations, businesses and volunteers across the county, as well as running their own projects. They had recently refreshed their brand and were looking to implement the new look and feel on their website.

The VSNS team had identified several areas where their old website was falling short and felt there was an opportunity to make improvements. The old site was not easy for visitors to navigate, with navigation menu titles that weren’t clickable and some pages displaying content that was too similar to each other. They were also keen to promote the benefits of volunteering to a more diverse audience.

Voluntary Support North Surrey approached me&you with a clear idea of what they wanted for the new site and we worked closely with them to bring their vision to life.

It was important that the new site would continue to work with a number of plug-ins, including VolunteerPlus and Events Calendar.

Solution

Based on suggestions supplied by the client, we reviewed their old site and developed an improved site map, detailing a number of sample user journeys. This provided a comprehensive overview of the site structure and highlighted where plug-in integration was required.

Once the site map was signed off by the client, we created a wireframe showing the layout and proposed content for a few key pages. Next, we produced a Design System laying out all the elements of the new website from colours and fonts, to icons and content blocks. These elements were then applied to the design of all of the site’s pages before being built in Wordpress.

We provided some training for the VSNS team so that they could become familiar with the backend of the Wordpress site and feel confident populating and updating the site themselves.

 

Impact

The new website is brighter and more modern, communicating the benefits of volunteering with greater impact. Design elements, icons and colour help draw attention to all important areas of content.

In the backend, web pages are created using an intuitive and flexible block builder which makes it very easy to create new pages and add new content. The VSNS inhouse team have already found it much easier to update than their previous site.

Visitors to the new site now enjoy a better user experience and find it easier to navigate and access the information they’re looking for. New functionality such as FAQs has encouraged the team to add even more useful content. All of this has helped Voluntary Support North Surrey to more clearly communicate their services to organisations, businesses and individuals in the area, and ultimately attract more people to get involved with volunteering.
